Dr. Bill Chameides, dean of Duke University's environmental school and lead blogger of www.thegreengrok.com, gives tips on how to fight global warming by retooling your trips to the grocery store.
@robesofearth Considering salmon are not native to Tasmania, you might be better finding a sustainable, locally caught alternative. I'm not sure of the quality of the industry in Tasmania, but salmon farming has caused severe environmental problems in most areas where it has been established. As a predatory fish, it simply takes too much protein to raise these fish in a small, enclosed area. It's like trying to raise lions for food - you'd need a whole sheep ranch to support it.
okay so I live in Australia, right on Tasmania's doorstep. If I choose the Alaskan salmon, I'm being 'greener', but if I choose the Tassie salmon, I'm being local. What happens when local isn't the better choice? Is organic from the UK better for me to buy than non-organic from down the road?
The single most important area is to cut back on ALL meat, since pig/cow/chicken are mostly factory farm grown in the US and are living on grain, it uses vast quantities of energy-fossil fuels, water, and is awful for the environment. The sewage is toxic and doesn't go to a waste treatment plant like human waste. (why? don't know) but a lot of it gets into the ground water and local streams!
This is great! :) Thanks for sharing. Remember those canvas bags! Alot of stores now carry inexpensive canvas bags that you can purchase during your visit if you forgot yours. :)

industrial farmed meat of all kinds needs to be illegal. it's poison for the earth, poison for you body, and very cruel.
best solution is to grow your own food in your garden organically. check out Permaculture.

Less meat, less dairy.
Healthier for you, healthier for us.
