Foxton, New Zealand, 28/11/2007 06:45am

Was ZZzz-ing away yesterday morning and heard a loud noise.....sorta like a helicopter landing in the back yard. Almost. The neighbouring dairy farmer had contracted a helicopter to spray the significant growth of gorse and broom on his side of our common fence. Note you don't see any of that crap on MY side of the fence. :-)

I admired the obvious skill of the heli pilot.....flying so low, barely more than 7 metres off the deck.

If anyone knows what make / model of helicopter this is, please let me know.

29/12/2007 - From Jason in California:

Hi there,

Just thought I'd drop you a line about that helicopter...
It is an MD 500E Model, made by McDonnell Douglas Helicopters in Mesa Arizona. Originally, these were made by Hughes Aircraft Corp. in California and were known as Hughes 500's. The model that sprayed near your place had an "E" front, which is the more modern pointed windshield
compared to the old style (remember magnum PI's buddy T.C?
He had the older one. They are very fast and nimble helicopters! I'm also a helicopter aerial applicator (we don't call it crop dusting anymore)in California, and have flown those in the past.(Now fly a Bell Jet Ranger) The tanks on the heli look to be Isolair tanks and those spray-booms you saw are made of stainless steel and are usualy just a little narrower that the rotor disk diameter. The helicopter has a hydraulic pump which runs off the heli's output (drive)shaft which powers the spray system (usually 30-50psi).There will usually be about 25-28 nozzles on the booms which are pretty interesting, as they have several types of choosable orofices you can select based on conditions and what you're applying....they also help control drift of the chemicals. As far as the early awakening...it sucks abit...but generally, Agriculture is exempt from early noise abaitments. Hope you found this interesting.
Best wishes,
Jason

  • @barefootnhot I had a better song on it originally, but YouTube blocked it due to copyright. Hey...they want the ad revenue.....not me. Turn the sound off and watch the cool flying.
