During WW2, more than 15,000 US pilots completed their aircraft carrier qualification training on Lake Michigan, aboard the USS Wolverine and USS Sable Trainer Carriers.
Today, it is estimated there are still 60 or so planes, crashed during training, that still lie at the bottom of the lake Michigan.

This one is now at the Navy Museum in Pensacola and is currently being cleaned and restored. It will be a mix of original aircraft and new-build to replace what is missing or badly corroded. The latest info I have is that it will go to the Pacific Air Museum in Hawaii.

The USN still claims authority over their wrecks (although a few are in private hands) and have prosecuted others for attempting to remove them. This one will be restored for static museum display and not for flight.
