NLOTH yes bland... ATYCLB... not bad, some good tunes from that one... you can't call that one bland... The same for HTDAAB.... some good tunes in that one... NLOTH has shown it not to be too much of a success in the charts... But i wouldnt worry about the charts too much these days... They are influenced by teeny bopper style purchases and listening styles, and U2 does not fit that mold too well... these days.
If I were to use your defination of "selling out", then I can make a case with everything and everyone as selling out. But who really cares if one were to sell out (as you define it). Really! It's just music. Like it or hate it. If you love Culture Club, love them and never say sorry.
So, you write and produce a song, then suddenly a diaper company wants to give you ten million dollars to use it on a commercial you'd refuse? Yeah, right! The point is, they've turned down at least several hundred million to co. who wanted to use their ongs. The few coorporate sponsors they've partnered with the majority of the money goes to Special Olympics or other top organizations. Focused on being the biggest band ever? They've always said that. Who cares. Anything to hate on Bono. Boring!
They were once a young hungry band who made music because they had something to say.
Now they're focused on being the 'Biggest Band Ever', have corporate sponsors, slap their name on a ubiquitous music player, and are very concerned with their finances. If their albums don't spend long at #1 they're concerned. Yet 'no one has sold out'? You mean ever? What a ridiculous statement! Artists lose creativity for money ALL THE TIME. If you enjoy this decade's output, you like bland. Admit it.
Sold out? The most overused meaningless expression ever used. No one has sold out and if somehow we've agreed to what that actually meant and u2 did sell out, who cares. Who cares! They're still are one of the great bands ever and we are so lucky to be around as they share their music with us. Enjoy it while you can.
Even though they've sold out since ATYCLB, they still do things here and there that prove they haven't completely lost their greatness. I point to this live version, The Ground Beneath Her Feet, Mercy, the live version of Crazy Tonight they're currently performing on tour, and Electrical Storm. But still, the past 3 albums have been bland...
