Four Central Louisiana parishes expected to see some flooding
Communities near rivers in Central Louisiana continue preparing for the worst as an overloaded Mississippi River threatens to flood cities near the river and its tributaries.
Meanwhile, the process to open 28 of the 350 floodgates of the Bonnet Carre Spillway was begun Monday began by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and officials are still deciding whether to open the Morganza Spillway to provide further relief from the surging Mississippi waters.
Local officials are making plans in case levees are breached.
According to the latest estimated inundation maps released by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, parts of Avoyelles, Catahoula, Concordia and LaSalle parishes are expected to flood.
Concordia Parish officials decided on Monday to move to Level 2 of the parish's evacuation plan, which is the suggested pre-planning for evacuation and pre-packaging of irreplaceable property. Level 3 in a voluntary evacuation, while Level 4 is a mandatory evacuation.
Among the local officials who met Monday morning to make the decision were Concordia Parish Police Jury President Melvin Ferrington, Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland, Ferriday Mayor Glen McGlothin, Concordia Parish Sheriff Randy Maxwell and Morris White, the parish's director of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.
