Bresson is a master. But i don't want to compare him with Tarkovsky. (two Gods ;)

i agree that Solaris isn't one of his best movies. Tarkovsky himself said that he didn't like his interpretation after all.

Mirror is priceless though- you should see if you still haven't done it.

Try also 'The Sacrifice'- you won't find any 'arty' or 'affected' Elements in there.

I guess that it isn't easy 'GET' his films. But once you got it, it won't let you go...

  • I regret to say that Tarkovsky isn't one of my favorites, Evelyn. I thought STALKER was one of the dullest movies ever made and some of the others, like SOLARIS and NOSTALGHIA, arty and affected. ANDREI RUBLEV was pretty good, particularly the bell-casting scene, but I'm afraid I'm not that big a fan of Tarkovsky.

  • Yes, Tarkovsky. It's wonderful.

  • MIRROR is by Tarkovsky, isn't it? Not Bresson. Haven't seen it.

  • High praise indeed. Who else do you rate? Have you seen Mirror?

  • Isn't it atypical of Bresson to show someone beheaded and lanced off a horse? Usually he just suggests death and violence, doesn't he? Like the suicide at the beginning of Une Femme Douce, the prison fight in L'Argent, the shooting at the end of Le Diable Probablement.

  • Do seek it out. Perhaps Bresson's greatest, next to DIARY OF A COUNTRY PRIEST. Pure truth, pure poetry.

  • there is something different about it (I do not find it as attractive, but maybe it's just a bad trailer). Notice however the way the camera focuses mid-body, cutting out the head in favor of showing the action of the hands, a typical Bresson approach. Anyway, I will have to see it, because I am a fan!

  • Le moins réussi des films de Bresson, c'est indiscutable. Mais même quand il n'est pas au sommet de son art, il est bien meilleur que de nombreux autres "metteurs en scène"...
