This film is a mess compared to the books, but it is a beautiful mess. Some of the actors in it are great and the production design still looks awesome.

Thanks for the tip, now I won't go anywhere near the book. I thought the movie was basically a teen love story which takes center stage over a dystopian future with its own set of fickle rules.

That's because Stanley Kubrick would never shoot a movie with a bad script. He also was smart enough to realize that some things need to be changed to fit the narrative of a movie and that the pacing is entirely different.

While Stephen King thought that "The Shining" was far from his novel and didn't like how Kubrick changed some plot elements, the movie worked well on its own. The version King had in mind became a mini-series in 1997 and that didn't have half the impact the 1980 version had.
