Czech mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená singing the soprano solo Laudamus Te from Johann Sebastian Bach's 1749 Mass In B Minor (Messe In H-Moll, BWV 232). Czech TV broadcast of a 1997 concert in Brno with orchestra Musica Florea conduced by Marek Štryncl. Despite the fact that this was only the begining of her career, even here, as well as on her first solo CD, you can already hear the reason why she is so well known today and respected as one of the greatest artists.

  • Of course her voice is wonderful, but the sleeves on that dress are as overinflated as Anna Netrebko's ego!

  • Mwahahahaha, yeah... I'm still having second thoughts about putting "please ignore the dress" in the description of this video. XD

  • So I take it U like Kozena?

  • It depends. :) I love her in these Bach arias, Handel too, especially alto and mezzo rep, but I positively hate her when she attempts stuff that's too high for her. She ruined (otherwise perfectly amazing) Cesare under Minko. She is NOT supposed to sing Cleopatra. End of story. :)

  • @lalagonegaga So thumbs up or down on her in Idamante? She was making that point of stating she is a mezzo and won't be a soprano anytime soon on a BBC interview on Youtube.

  • @olympicfreak678 Hmmm, so far I've only heard her Idamante from the Met, but not the DVD version. It's more or less ok, but I still prefer her in mezzo rep, so I totally support her decision. :)

  • Me gusta el color de la voz de esta soprano, suena muy bien, mantiene el mismo color en el registro alto y en el grave. Ademas, se le entiende lo que canta.

  • great singer,Mrs Kozena is an outstanding artist!

  • It is too bad that we cannot have these performances here in Canada anymore.

Especially since the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony orchestra cut ties with the German offer to be a key part of the German unification ceremonies.

  • too fast... anyway, bravo Magdalena and Musica Florea!

  • Ich hätte auch gerne was von dem Tee!

  • she's so pretty!! look just like one of the disney's princesses!! xD

  • everything about this is so beautiful

  • Brilliant violin playing! And Ms Kozena is great.

  • @MoonyMara I think SHE is gorgeous.

  • @olympicfreak678 Good point!!! I'm no expert, but my guess is all oratorio texts are taken from the Bible (aka "the Book"), so the singer must read the 'holy words' from 'the book', as opposed to have them memorized (and present them as their own words). Have you ever seen an old lady on a train or a bus thumbing through a worn out Bible -- you'd think she's got the whole thing memorzied. But, apparently, the Bible texts are read and re-read. Again, I'm not an expert, just an observer. :)))
