THIS STRANGE OBSESSION is one of the few songs of Zaine that are issued on CD. On the CD 'What Me Worry?' of Yukihiro Takahashi (YMO) Zaine sings the song, together with the French female singer Ronny. On that album Zaine also can be heard in backing vocals on two other songs: The Real You and Disposable Love.

NEWS UPDATE: NEWS UPDATE: All zaine's albums NOW AVAILABLE for download from ITUNES STORE, including his new 2011 albun CHILD WHO WANTS THE MOON and the albums ASHES AND DIAMONDS and FIGVRES. More news: zainegriff.co.uk

Here Zaine performs THIS STRANGE OBSESSION live and it's obvious it's a thrilling song that gives Zaine and his band all opportunities to show their talents. This is the only song where the impressive black female singer Doretta Carter (here just 21 years old!) sings a part of the lead vocals, instead of only backing vocals: she sings the part that Ronny sings on Takahashi's album. Also the guitarists are doing a great job in this song.
This video-part is taken from Zaine's Grand Finale concert in The Venue London. It was the 28th of july 1983, huge posters of Zaine were sticked everywhere on London. His eyes even stared at you from the walls of the underground... Zaine's fame was really coming up in and around London and also in Holland, Belgium and Japan Zaine had a lot of fans - his Japanese fanclub being the most fanatic. Zaine was one of the exponents of the New Romantic wave in New Wave music in the eighties, just like other bands like Visage, Ultravox, Steve Strange, Adam & The Ants etc. Ultravox even had the same management and for that reason Zaine and Ultravox were close and worked together several times. Warren Cann of Ultravox already joined Zaine's band in 1979 when they played on the Isle of Wight and Zaine also later joined the project Helden - of Warren Cann and Hans Zimmer.

Shortly before Zaine had been on tour in Holland and this concert in the great hall The Venue could have been crucial for his career.
Zaine had problems with his management and record company, due to a sort of 'strangling deal' in which the records company had invested so much money in a worldwide deal with Zaine, that the regional headquarters would have to invest too much money to release his records. It sounds unbelievable, but it happens a lot. The concert in The Venue was really fantastic. Around 2000 fans had gathered together and Zaine had a superb band around him:
The great guitarist Alan Murphy (who had played with Kate Bush and joined Go West after playing with Zaine and later the famous band Level 42) as lead guitarist, on bass Simon Skinner (who had played with Tom Robinson), on saxophone, keyboards and accordian musical genius Brian Gulland, who worked for Rick Wakeman and also joined classical projects, the backing vocalists Pamela White, Ray Shell and Dorretta Carter (who toured with Godspell and also toured more than a year with the band Osibisa), Clive edwards on drums and last but certainly not least Hans Zimmer, now the worlds most famous movie soundtrack composer who makes music for most famous movies, but by then already was a genius, always experimenting with computers, synthesizers and keyboards.
On the afterparty of the concert, many famous people shaked hands with Zaine, such as the former managers of Michael Jackson, but also the world famous mime-dancer Rudolph Nurejev had attended Zaine's concert and complemented Zaine with his stage presentation.

The concert in The Venue was probably the best I ever saw from Zaine. I filmed it with a video-recorder, but hey....in those days the camcorder was not even invented, so I was carrying a large recorder and holding a cam. No possibility to get a line for the music or automatic sound control, so to avoid the sound being way too loud, I had to cover the microphone with tape.
So, don't expect a great quality, but when you look through this you'll see and hear the beauty of Zaine's music. A beauty that nobody who has ever heard or seen it can ever forget... So after many years on the shelve....it was time to upload these songs to YouTube for the world to see.

It's truly a sin that until now still Zaine's albums were never reissued on CD. The fact that until this moment already 100,000 people viewed my Zaine video's proofs that his music is still interesting and worth it to be played.

Listen to Zaine's music and enjoy it!
