Indeed, there is much more of the Doors to the Birthday Party than there ever was of their (silly) "Goth" contemporaries running around the UK at the time of which the Party had little if anything in common other than tenuous shared roots in mid seventies Punk rock.

Speaking as someone from back in the day - The Birthday Party Were definitely NOT a Goth band. It's ridiculously lazy to cast them as such. The nearest comparison would be Beefheart / Stooges / Fall / Pop Group / Slits / Pere Ubu along with "movements" such as Dada and certain Surealists. Filter all of this via the Australian outback via Cormac Mcarthy and heroin and you've got the birthday party. Please note: NONE of this has ANYTHING to do with Andy Sex Gang or Alien Sex Fiend!!
