If PA is not available, then I hook up my laptop to Logitech three piece speaker set. It comes with a bass booster speaker. For about $70 it sounds great, and I can hear the bass quite clearly :)

I recently got a Zoom audio/video recorder so I should be getting better quality live recordings. Please make sure to use external speakers preferably with bass booster.
