Determining the nature of the zeros of quadratics by calculating the sign of the discriminant. if the discriminant is positive, then the resulting quadratic will result in two real roots. If the discriminant is equal to zero, then the function has one real zero and the vertex of the parabolic curve just kisses the x-axis. If the discriminant is negative then there is no real roots. Instead you will have two complex conjugate roots.
