Abul isn't destructible until he raises the white flag, so he needs hit once the boss has blown up. The trick is to destroy it a split second before it fires, so by the time it explodes and he raises the white flag, he'll be hit by the projectile. It's much easier with debug mode because then you can just one-hit-kill the boss with the D button.
