ugh refuse to pay the rent. there might be a clause in your lease that the manager has to maintain an apartment that is liveable. this place is not. also check with the city building code enforcement. they issue or revoke certificate of occupancy. also see the board of health.
i would never pay my rent in that situation.
also take lots of video. GET A LAWYER AND SUE THEM. THIS IS PISSING ME OFF TO SEE THIS.
HOPE YOU MOVED BY THE TIME YOU SEE MY POST.

I just had this same exact thing happen to me yesterday, also living in an apartment here, where all 4 share the same drains and lines and what not. Very nasty. I had to sit with it over night as well. Same thing happened in my tub, everytime the people upstairs flushed, dirty water, turd, and toilet paper came out of the drain in my tub, and toilet would bubble just like that. They've fixed it today, and I just bought 2 bottles of bleach. I intend on using all of it...

The pipes have been doing this for years and it's not just building 2. The owner has known for 6 years and has done nothing. He is a slum lord from the city. Believe me management wont or cant do anything. People should Call the health department, and keep calling them. I did thats why I was fired from there. But thats ok I didnt want to work for a slum lord anyway.

this is actually sewage coming out.
It is sewage which other flats are making and flushing down THEIR toilets, the gas would probably be methane or ammonia, or Hydrogen Sulphide or others, all highly toxic.
Are you living on the ground floor?
Cos this might be caused by poor sewage system, (possibly capacity reached), clogged downstream somewhere, or poor ventilation (from the bubbles). I have to agree with brothers here, Please talk to the health department.

Oh god, that's revolting. Good thing you moved out.

I just had this happen where I live. The main sewer line plugged up. Everytime I flushed the toilet, water would run out a drain into the crawl space. There are 4 other people that are tied into the drain. All 4 apartments share the main drain. I called management and they said to wait, the situation got worse, so I called for emergency service. They said they couldn't do anything and it would have to wait till Monday. Here someone oped up cleanout and dropped in a newspaper.
Report this to the health department. If they don't fix it within a few days, you can terminate your lease and move to a better apartment. This is a health issue.
