Strait-Highlands RDA - G.R.E.E.N. Business Award 2010 - Shean Co-op, Inverness

The Grass Roots Environmental Excellence Network (G.R.E.E.N.) award is awarded to a business that has demonstrated an effective effort to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and related energy use through behavioural change, demand side management measures (making upgrades that result in reduced energy use) or the implementation of renewable energy technology.

Shean Cooperative Limited (with over 1300 active members) has taken direct steps to reduce costs to its customers and show the community that environmental sustainability is something we should all play a part in at the grassroots level. Recently Shean Cooperative planned and implemented over $850,000 in energy saving projects that greatly decrease its reliance on fossil fuels. Some of the energy saving projects included:
- Lowered energy used for lighting its store by 40-50%
- Installed indoor and outdoor LED lighting, which is currently of the highest efficiency standard available
- Insulated ceiling and walls in its warehouse
- Replaced leaking door seals
- Replaced oil furnace with high efficiency propane furnace for stand-by use
- Installing state-of-the-art refrigeration system that reclaims 100% heat used for heating the store and providing hot water needs
- The refrigeration system reduces the required compressors by 50% while adding 30% more freezer capacity!

The Shean Cooperative has reduced its estimated operational costs including energy and maintenance by approximately 68% annually!
