They don't use other zebra subspecies because the Quagga was a variety of the Plains zebra. The back-breeding they're doing now (selective breeding in reverse) is to "draw out" the physical characteristics lying dormant within plains zebra that the quagga was known for. Scientists did the same thing with the Tarpan - look up the Konik horse for further info on "back breeding".

I'm only a sixth grader now, but I hope to get a master's degree in genetics and I hear there are head mounts (from hunting) on walls around the world. I believe if I can collect information on the DNA in those it's possible to bring these magnificent creatures back to the earth. :-)

@manolodlospavos Its a genetic defect that is quite rare & happens with most striped animals. The genes that controlled the stripe patterns were turned on early resulting in thickened stripes I've seen pics of tigers with the same thing. It also happens with spotted animals. If you look up King Cheetah on Google you can see the same thing that the Zebra has.
