Katie Melua said that she liked the song "because it is a simple juxtaposition of a trivial idea ("Nine Million Bicycles") against an important idea ("I will love you till I die")".
The song "Nine Million Bicycles" was issued in 2005 and it reached to #2 in both Netherlands and Poland, #4 in Belgium, #5 in UK in 2005/2006.
According to Melua, the inspiration for the song came from when her interpreter during her time in Beijing, China was showing her and her manager, Mike Batt, around the city. The interpreter gave them information about Beijing, including that there are supposedly nine million bicycles in the city. Batt wrote a song based around the title "Nine Million Bicycles" upon his return to England two weeks later.
Katie Melus was the United Kingdom's biggest-selling female artist and Europe's highest selling European female artist in 2006, ECHO Award Best International Female Artist in 2007.
She was born in the Georgian SSR, but moved to Belfast, Northern Ireland at the age of eight and then relocated to London, England at the age of 14.
