Interview of Rainier Spencer, Ph.D.
Link http://www.scsv.nevada.edu/~spencer/

Spencer argues that there is no such thing as race, since so many identities and racial mixtures exist within each person. Spencer makes a legitimate point, but that his connection ultimately ignores what can actually be done about racism.

  • I totally agree with Spencer. There are too many inherent contradictions in race and mixed race identity. Quite simply, if science tells us that "race" doesn't exist, how then can "birace" or "multirace" exist? It's like adding 0 + 0 and somehow getting 2. My question is this; since the vast majority of African-Americans are about one-fifth European, if they all started identifying themselves as "mixed" what would advocates of "mixed race" do then?

  • I disagree with you when you started questioning Spencer about using the term white at the 31 minute mark. To make things less complicated so he doesn't have to continuously preface his opinion with a long explanation, I have no problem with him using something like "a person who considers him/herself to be white" because society sees it him/her that way. It doesn't contradict the fact that he doesn't believe in race. Everyone else believes in race so he simply speaks their language.

  • With the black culture in reference to Tiger Woods, we know and claim responsibility for the behavior of our entire race. Blacks have never "written" anyone off. We didn't disown Micheal Jackson, O.J. Simpon, or anyone else that does't make us look "good". The problem is the assumption that we come from the same cloth of disowning someone as if Blacks could own anyone in the first place. Slavery isn't the language of any culture instead of white people. It's a very interesting denial indeed.
