A cultural center and ancient capital, Wiang Kum Kam was completely forgotten about after being flooded by the Ping River hundreds of years ago. It became a mythical city, its very existence put into question. Now it is home to 20 archeological sites and no less than 10 ancient temples.

  • Nice imagery - unfortunately some of the data is inaccurate - by 2002 (publishing date of the book Wieng Kum Kam - Atlantis of Lan Na) 34 temples had been excavated fully or partially, more have been discovered since then. Currently there are five temples in modern use - 2 of them (Chedi Liam & Kan Thom) are known to have been in use at the time Mengrai built the Lan Na empire and are possibly the longest continuous use temples in Thailand. If visiting the site - get the book, you'll need it.
