Development of my Eadweard Muybridge / Theo Jansen inspired kinetic paper animals. Featured are a solar powered horse followed by a horse and some Giraffes controlled by a Basic Stamp 2 micro-controller.

A kit version of the kinetic horse is now available for you to own. Follow the link for details:

Music credit: 'Sawdust & Diamonds' by 'Joanna Newsom'.

  • I like the Giraffe. Nice work all round, but do you have a problem with the solar powered version with the sunlight damaging the paper?

  • @TrippleDragon No.. but then live in Scotland so sunlight is a bit of a novelty. Besides it's only paper. If it gets damaged it's easily fixed or replaced.

The horse filmed here in 2007 is still hanging in the same spot and working fine. I had to fix one of its paper joints this year but it took all of 5 minutes.

  • awesome work. I'd love to see a walking n a surface version. if that can be done. I work in cardboard art and would love to do some kinetic work in my art.

and BTW for the haters of bjork out there....opinions are never facts. Just your opinion. Shes got tons of fans so she must be dong something right :)

  • @marxdarx Next vid after this one shows the machine walking on the ground.

I like Bjork too (even though it isn't her on this video).

  • really like it!

does anyone know the music? who is the singer?

  • 'Sawdust & Diamonds' by 'Joanna Newsom'.

  • This was really cool! Thanks for showing.

Also, props for the song choice. Sawdust and Diamonds is possibly my favourite Joanna Newsom song. <3

  • This sculpture kind of makes me sad. No matter how fast the horse runs he'll always be stuck there...

Still, this really helps me as I'm hoping to make a kinetic animal for my Final Major Project at art college. Thanks.

  • AMAZING...knowing that its ran by solar energy, its spectacular...=)

  • loved your vid and the song is perfect! made me buy my own kit. Though as you mentioned, the sun didn't affect your horse? Well, mine is half red and half white! haha. Guess London and Scotland get quite a varying degree of sunlight.

  • That's great man. It's amazing and graceful, elegant. Bravo!

  • Beautiful work and great choice of song.

  • @TrippleDragon If you see my channel I have a kinetic horse too, not shown is that the opposite side is pale red cos it faces the sun. I think it's quite a nice effect though, adds character.

  • How u did yhis amazing thing..

  • You should make some big ones and let run out in the field :D

  • I would like to have one... =/

    Looks really beautiful!
