Here's a short clip of the Adafruit / Dropout Design Game of Life. This is made up of 16 4x4 boards, soldered together on their borders.
I bought my first kit from Adafruit, then got the rest of the PCBs from them, ordered parts from Mauser. In the end, I probably didn't save any money, and I definitely would have saved time if I'd just gotten all of the kits from Adafruit. I did end up re-flashing all of the boards (note: fuses are important!), and the Boarduino is invaluable for that task.
This is powered with an offboard 5V supply, and the connections between boards are done with 22ga wire through the holes, and a generous amount of solder.
The assembly is mounted to a slightly oversized (about 1/4" on each side) sheet of 1/4" plexi, using 4/40 hardware on the outermost corners, and the outer corners of the central 4 boards.
It was pretty easy to do, just fairly repetitive to solder in all the LEDs and resistors. Fortunately, it goes pretty fast once you get going. The single-board kit is pretty affordable, and takes less than an hour to solder up.

@drEmue What's not to believe?

Sure, but it was fun to build...
