On the symphony orchestra stage, authenticity is strived for. On the opera stage, every imaginable distortion is allowed. HORRIBLE. It is WRONG to misrepresent other's (in this case Bizet's) art.

Escamillo does not die in the opera. Yet he does in this weird production of it. You can see them carrying his body out of the ring.

@frogstar1fighter ich habe die produktion auch in der anderen besetzung gesehen und fand sie toll! ich wüsste gern, wie die carmen in der zweitbestzung hieß, das habe ich leider vergessen... kann jemand weiterhelfen?

Horrible! It seems to be  an horror movie, with bad actors and bad director!

Without a doubt, the production is quit modern and minimalistic, but if i went to the opera i don't want to see a costume show! Besides that ther is a second production at the same time at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, which is more "traditional" (and as i think borring!)

The cast is just great, and i would recomment everyone to watch this opera, although the final scene is the most weakest of the whole opera (but that has not much to do with this production)

Die Inszenierung ist ohne zweifel modern, grenzt sich dabei aber vor allem von einer gleichzeitig laufenden in der Deutschen Oper ab.

Ich mag keine Kostümshows, deshalb finde ich diese Inszenierung großartig!

Ich habe sie nie mit Villazon gesehen, aber die aktuelle Besetzung ist ebenfalls aller höchstes Niveau und sehr gewissenhaft ausgewählt!

Leider ist gerade das Finale der große Knackpunkt am ganzen Stoff, ansonsten kann ich jedem nur empfehlen es sich trotzdem anzuschauen.

As Daniel Kehlmann put it in his speech at the Salzburg Festival: Productions like this one are a phenomenon that mostly belongs to the German speaking countries. It would be interesting to take a look at the cultural history that made this bizarre theatre tradition come true and survive for such a long time, although hardly anyone REALLY wants to see stuff like this.

I'll bet he was good in all but this final scene. He simply lacks the dramatic power to be effective. He is still a very good singing actor.
