http://madisonindiana.us/madisons-abandoned-nuclear-power-plant/ Watch this drive through footage from the Marble Hill Nuclear Power Plant near Madison Indiana. This ghost facility marks a spectacular failure of "counting the costs." Construction began in 1977 and was halted in 1984 before the plant was operational. These nuclear power reactors were never completed.

Marble Hill is currently being used for industrial scrap material.

Here is more some background information from Wikipedia about this abandoned Nuclear Power facility.

Construction began in 1977 and was halted in 1984 with Unit #1 approximately 80% complete and Unit#2 40% complete. A proposal in June 1984 to complete the project was made by three of the major construction contractors: the Bechtel Power Corporation, Sargent & Lundy and the Westinghouse Electric Corporation. This plan was rejected because it required Public Service Indiana to continue to find financing for the $7.1 billion project.

Two "sister" plants were constructed, Braidwood Nuclear Generating Station and Byron Nuclear Generating Station, both in Illinois. Braidwood serves the Chicago area. As a point of comparison, the Braidwood facility took 12 years to build at a final cost of $5.2 billion.

  • I worked at the facility for two summers as an Engineering Coop. While I was anti nuke in high school, I became more neutral as I worked with the dedicated and hard working engineers. However, what people forget is it wasn't just 3 mile island and honeycomb concrete that killed it, it was the 18% interest rates too.

  • Good point. It was a complicated time to build anything.

  • are the fuel rods taken out??

  • The plant was never fully functional. All that's left is scrap material

  • I'd be happy to have them built nearby. Have a friend in MO that lives a few miles from the nuke plant. By law they have to supply their area's schools with boo-koo bucks. The kids get the best of everything so..... build one in my back-yard!

Oh yeah, their unemployment in the county is practically non-existent.

  • @eurodancer987

This power plant was under construction.

The nuclear fuel rods are inserted only after the power plant is fully completed and has passed all the safety tests and acquired certification.

There has NEVER been any nuclear fuel in this plant.

  • 20110312 - worked at Marble Hill for PSI utility about 30 years ago. Continued on w/ a position at Braidwood NPS in Illinois until 1992 I think. Got out of the nuke industry, it was dying a slow dead. My wife & I were at NCAA tourney in Louisville yesterday and decided to see if we could find it. Electric rates will triple or more in next 8 years and shortsighted decisions ruin our grandchildren future. I will go to my grave knowing that nuke power was one of the keys to this country's success.

  • cant u go inside? and y did the plant close down?

  • Very wierd. I read about this on google. A "sucsess" plant was constructed right across the river. It was a major loss. Just think what might have happened if they actually finished it.....thanks for sharing.
