My freelance electronics lab that I use for prototyping of embedded devices at PowerCraft Technology. I primary use free/libre open source software development tools. Simple but effective and powerful.

  • There is currently only one way to get the gEDA tools working for you and not the other way around, and that is to try and don't give up and keep asking little questions on the mailinglists, and also use it on a GNU/Linux systems else you will lose a lot of the flexibility the gEDA tools offer. Try to read the wiki pages and some users made documentation, that is straggling around the internet.

  • Nice workspace, is that gschem running on your screen? It seems very hard to handle, I find it very un-userfriendly - have you got any suggestions on how to get the hang on it?

  • It is indeed gEDA you see on the tft screen. Is a free/libre open source set of utilities to make electronic schematics and printed circuit boards.

The learning curve of the tools can be quite hard, but I find the reward and benefits high with a flexible sustainable way of developing systems. I also know the tools are not perfect, but the community is great and development is in a continuing process making it better.

  • I love this stuff. I've been playing with geda recently. It is hard, but I've been making some progress. What's your opinion of gspiceui? It's made things a little easier, but seems less flexible than just the command line. I like how it integrates gschem, gnucap, and gwave.

  • Thanks for you extensive answers, I'll give it a try. :-)
