Guardian photographer Dan Chung tests the new Canon EOS 5DmkII video capabilities. This short clip shows the flicker using the cameras 30p mode in Chinese (PAL country) 50hz lighting outside at a popular tourist venue.

Please note this is a worst case example and many other scenarios may work just fine or show only moderate flicker. In my experience this is the same sort of flicker that is also seen on the Nikon D90 in similar conditions.

  • This is an old video from before the manual firmware upgrade. At the time there was no way to tell the shutter speed.

  • Hi Dan, the flicker is real, but for shooting PAL in 60hz territories.

It's not like a normal video camera. It doesn't matter what shutter speed you use, unfortunately.

  • Change the shutter speed to 1/50th and it will go away.
