I am Lao. I am NOT Laos.

Laos is a country. I am not a country. Drop the 's' from Laos when describing a person, place, or thing.
- A Lao person, not a Laos person.
- Lao food, not Laos food.
- Lao language, not Laos language.
- I am Lao. I am NOT Laos.

I do realize that some people prefer to use 'Laotian' instead of 'Lao.' This video is not here to debate that usage. I interchange Lao and Laotian sometimes.

I hope to do a live version of this soon. Maybe a Lao song karaoke video also. I'd be even more delighted if someone with more skills achieves this before me.

*** This video has nothing to do with that Alexandra Wallace rant about the Asians in the library at UCLA. What the heck is 'Ching Chong ling long ting tong?' ***

  • on my national test thing in the bay area, the bubble is marked as "Laotian"

  • @ChrisRocksYourAnus Right, "Laotian" refers to people who came from Laos (the country). "Lao" is one ethnic group. Other Laotian ethnic groups include Hmong, Mien, Tai Dam, Khmu. It's is ok to say 'Laotian" instead of "Lao," but it's not correct to say "Laos" when you are not talking about the country. The point of the video is to distinguish between "Lao" and "Laos." Thanks for your comment, and I hope you did well on your test.

  • i am laos i am lao i am laotion......who gives a flying rats ass....there are more important matters than this ongoing arguement. lets get past this

  • @teamasianstyles Thanks for your comment. I agree that there are more important things than this, but it doesn't hurt to have a civil discussion about it. We can discuss this and still work on more important things at the same time.

  • It is Laotian

  • @B0RNfree The purpose of this video is to convince people to not use 'Laos' instead of 'Lao.' If people want to use 'Laotian' instead is Lao, that's ok, too, in my opinion. But, I don't think it's ever correct to use 'Laos' in place of 'Lao' or 'Laotian.' If you want to make your own video to convince people to use 'Laotian' exclusively, I'd love to see it. :))

Thanks again for viewing and commenting.

  • Everyone, please save yourself the trouble. It's a very simple thing to do for consistency sake. When speaking English, tell people you are Laotian (rhymes with WOW+tian). Remember that in the English language, Viet people refer to themselves by their extended name "VIETNAMESE". Similarly, the English name for Lao people is our extended name "LAOTIAN". From now on, say you are LAOTIAN. How should you pronounce Laotian?..."LAO" adds the "WOW" in LAOTIAN. =) From now on, shout out LAOTIAN PRIDE!

  • hahaha So cute i am Lao i am not Laos I'm not a country i am Lao

  • haha so cute !!! i am Lao

  • @sillyman7111 Yup you are correct. Which is why "Laotian" reflectively refers to nationality (which includes Khamu, Kui, Mien, Hmong, ethnic Lao, etc.). However "Lao" just refers to the the language spoken and the ethnic Lao people. Laos as a whole in my opinion is just as Western simplification of "Muang Lao."

  • omg so cute i love this well im lao really

  • Lol I always correct people when they say, "I am Laos." Shame shame.

  • OH I LOVE THUMACHOONG TO WHATEVER YOU SPEELL ITT
