Here, both difficulty switches are set to "expert". Set either the right or left switch (I don't remember which one does what) to "Novice". and the entire game play will be a lot slower. Setting the other one to "novice" makes you have to use your fire button to shoot. (which seems like it should be the other way around, it would make more sense if auto-fire was a benefit of the novice position).
It looks like the difficulty a regular 2600 games gets after you've played for a while but here they just went, screw it, people don't wont to mess around on easy let's go straight to insane level!

I have this on intellivision (where it's called astrosmash) and the asteroids come down very much slower which almost makes the game to easy.
I was surprised to see that the 2600 version was that much harder.
