  • Replaying history and having modern trials of historical controversial events such as a mass media reported (impact of radio in 1928) unique disaster (airship wreck near the North Pole) with the carefully edited interwoven theme of psychological trauma and stress both at the time and chronically are wonderfully scripted and acted.

  • Grossly and unfairly underrated film despite being flawed (film editors or too many editors given the Soviet and Italian co-production?). Leadership and command responsiblity, survivor psychology in extremis situations, individual sacrifice, human vanity, catch-22 of modern technology such as overreliance on same and saviour mechanisms, positive human characteristics brought out during emergency situations, defeat in victory and accomplishment, fine line between survival decisions.

  • In 1928 the USSR was on the cusp of announcing its first five year plan and in the late 1960's the USSR wished to clearly show a vibrant happy communal peasantry while softly criticizing by open display of seeming official incompetence the icebreaker breakdown and the failure to take the peasant radio amateur on the ship for example.

  • Eager amateurish actors combined with the then Soviet desire (1969) to build better cultural relations and focus on their "humanity" (i.e. the material help that they gave in searching for Nobile's survivors) along with fostering good relations with the then considerably powerful Italian Communist Party all coalesce in reinforcing a highly realistic overall minor character actor support.
