My understanding is that it is a good method for accessing the energy in coal when the coal is at very deep depths where conventional mining isn't economical. I think it would also be a preferred method of energy extraction rather than mountain top removal as in W. Virginia. Yes, UCG can impact surrounding aquifers and that's a consideration not to take lightly. But if the groundwater is of poor or low quality, then the tradeoff to conduct UCG may be beneficial.

Not a smart idea. What this video's not telling you is that by converting coal to gas and then to liquids loses over 50% of the energy of the original coal. It's not efficient nor is it even economical.

UCG is a filthy and dangerous process. It poisons underground water supplies and cause irreversible ground subsidence. What a fucking stupid idea.

All looks good without telling the viewers the underlying ifs and buts of this technology...Whatz the conversion of coal to syngas??? What % of syngas generated can be extracted? Does the technology affects the aquifiers, if any??? If conversion is not 100%, how do you plan 2 recover the remaining coal???
