My entry in the UkuleleJunky.com "Montreal Uke Grand Prix!" contest on ukuleleunderground.com. For this one, I went back to a time when cigarettes were considered to be good for you. Actually it wasn't that long ago, but in this Tex Williams / Merle Travis country and western classic you'll hear references to the "48 states" and "pettin' parties." Like the old Virginia Slims ads would say, "You've come a long way, baby..." Smoke 'em if you got 'em!

  • This really made me smile =) Great cover and video!

  • Thanks, Sebi. I gotta laugh myself every time I hear that cheesy Garage Band "West Coast Wah Wah" effect I used on uke #2!

  • Smoked it!

    (You already pointed out what I surmised: Most of those Marlboro ad guys are dead, quite a few from the product they pitched, I imagine.)

    Well done.

  • Ha! Thanks! BTW, factoid #3... the article I read said that of all the Marlboro Men, "only" three died of lung cancer. It also said the original guy was a 5 pack a day smoker. 5 packs a day??? That's 100 cigs! Times, say 6 minutes a smoke, that's 10 hours of non-stop Marlboro Country!!! Yeeee-hah!

  • PS: have you got light, pliz?

  • Ha! How did I know you would ask me that!!! Glad you liked it. Say hi to Georges for me! ;>}

  • Excellent cover and video editing!! Good luck with the Grand Prix! Cheers, Dirk.

  • haha soo funny

  • @ukecantdothat it's true? ha! ha! yes, I certainly will, he's beside me, not far, I think I'm gonna take it soon ;°)

  • Factoid #2: David McLean was hired in the early 1960's to portray the "Marlboro Man" in television and print advertising for Philip Morris, Inc. By contract, he was obligated to smoke Marlboro cigarettes. Lilo McLean, widow of David McLean, and their son, Mark Huth, filed suit August 30, 1996 in the United States District Court, Eastern District of Texas, in the matter of McLean vs. Philip Morris, Inc. (Case No. 2-96CV167) claiming wrongful death after McLean was stricken with lung cancer.
