My general rule for "matching" the pocket square is this: Often I will choose a pocket square that compliments one of the colors that I am wearing. But, you can also wear one that pops as long as it doesn't clash with the outfit. They don't have to match perfectly, if you are wearing blue for example, you can choose a square that is a shade of blue even if it is not the exact same shade. If you are wearing a tie, I like to choose one that picks up a subtle color in the tie.

I'm not sure that you are remembering the 80's and 90's accurately. However, I enjoy the pocket square, it is a modern spin on a timeless accessory. If they aren't for you, don't use them.
