On September 11, 2007 The Lost Colony costume shop and two outlying buildings burnt to the ground. The entire contents of all three buildings which included vintage costumes and other memorabilia from the production's 70 year-old history was lost forever. The firefighters worked valiantly to keep the blaze from expanding to the dressing rooms and the theatre. A 911 caller across the Roanoke Sound in Nags Head saw the blaze and alerted the authorities. Executive Director/Producer Carl V. Curnutte is interviewed near the end of this video footage with his response the morning follwing the tragedy. The video was taken by Ken Mann and used with his permission.
Since the theater is buried back in the woods and it was in the middle of the night in the off season, the fire wasn't noticed until the buildings were fully engulfed. The fire was actually reported by a resident across the sound in Colington
