This is some video of my previous layout Stacks Fork which was loosely based on the ex-Santa Fe Raton Pass line

  • Nice. I especially like the Santa Fe freight waiting for the Chief...very realistic.

But in the phase III era on the Chief, the sleepers were at the rear of the train. Not like it is today. You also might want to look into getting a Hi-Level dorm too. Intermountain will be releasing one in phase III soon.

The Roadrailers are neat too, but not really right for that era of Southwest Chief.

Didn't mean to criticize, just thought I'd help out with some prototype info.

  • Thanks for the comment and the proto tips. I do have some vid of the Chief on Raton at the end of ATSF (my era) but I forgot the order of set up the day the vid was taken. I do have a Train Station kit almost finished for a Coach / Dorm ex- ATSF 'Step-up' in Ph 3. Yes, the Roadrailers were a friend's so we ran then for a bit of a laugh. Question for you - would one of the new Walthers 72ft Baggage cars be correct for a mid-late 80's SW Chief?

  • The 89ft flats are either Walthers (channel sided) and Accurail (flush decks). The 4 wheel cars at the end are Walthers Front Runners. The Accurail cars are too wide as there are based on autorack flats. The new Walthers and Atlas cars are the correct width.

  • Absolutely.

The Budd baggage car by Walthers (released several years ago) is also a very good choice since it's close to a Santa Fe prototype which the Southwest Chief seemed to have a lot of and still has to this day. It took me a while to find one of the Amtrak Budd baggage cars on eBay for my HO Southwest Chief.

Mid to late 80s more likely then not would be in phase III paint, but not all too uncommon to find a phase II baggage on the Chief in the mid 80s.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks!

  • Nice amtrak! What type are those piggyback cars?(like what make?)
