I feel like a whining bitch, but I remember all those things and miss them terribly. I used to love going to Dubsky's too look at all the monster movie magazines. I also remember going to Damen field to get cat tales to use to blow off our fireworks on the fourth. Remember there was a marsh there with frogs, garter snakes and quail? We also loved the stock Yards. We would build forts, hunt rats, smoke cigarettes and explore.
@erniehmp Facebooks got BACK OF THE YARDS for people that lived there or want to find others or just relater stories about that neighborhood, it "was" a great one too.
@SCREWJOBsixtynine I grew up there from 1955 - 1963. Lived one block from Hedges school. Anyone remember Cinderella's? Awesome ice cream! Dubsky's Drug store? Peoples theatre? Bene's novelty store? Pete Missing barber shop? Coach's & the Hawaiian Lounge taverns? The fabulous Free Fair? I remember being at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Damen overpass. Hizzoner was there to do the honors.
Does anyone remember Carl and Eds and bernices store on 47th and racine? I lived at 48th and elizabeth in the 70s.Played baseball at damen feild and hung out at troop park.
