This is a demonstration on how I create tattoo stencils using my thermal fax machine.

Thermal faxes use the same technology as thermal copiers and cost a hell of a lot less. My particular fax machine does not generate enough heat to transfer the ink to the stencil paper, so I print a reversed image directly onto the carbon sheet instead.

For some reason, the rest of the video has been cut-off so you don't get to see the results. I wound up taking some photos of the completed stencil and I posted them at:

  • hi im fatkat ive done the same an it works better than your very expensive machines but i just cant get past it thermo faxing the image back words ,if you can help me let me know.

  • @fatkat702 You have to flip the original. If you have a computer, flip the image in any editor and print it out. If it's a hand-drawn image, then you'll have to trace it backwards.

  • hi do you know if the xerox copiers work?

  • @Mrsupersmudge xerox, the brand? Well, only if they have a thermal copier. :)

The catch is, these specific machines use a roll of transfer material that is like a sheet of plastic with toner on it. The machines use a heat process to fuse the toner onto the paper. It is this heat process that causes the hectograph ink to fuse to the stencil paper.

I'm planning on re-doing this video with some more detailed information about the insides of the machine.... one of these days. :)

  • Pefect Well Im Looking to purchase one on ebay is there a difference because the thermal fax that use plain paper & the fax machine that comes with the roll or you could use either

  • @BaitStar1 Get the one that uses plain paper. The one that uses the thermal paper roll most likely won't help you. Look for a Brother Intellifax; I'm not sure of the specific model numbers, but you can always research them online before you place a bid.

  • Don't use a sagem sp4840 as you need to re-chip it ever 140 pages,do what I did and get a brother t106 or t104. The sagem ones are good but very hard to get hold of the reset chips and they cost more then the whole fax machine.

  • @greenspoondcfc hi you got a pic off the bit you need to remove as i want to make sure i get it right cheers

  • @greenspoondcfc oh and the paper needs to go in the opposite way round to this video (carbon away from you, tracing paper facing you)

  • search for SAGEM SP4840 on ebay.co.uk thats what i use, take out the carbon ribbon from inside and put some tape over the pop up noggin and then remove a 2 inch flap just from the inner edge where the paper comes out or the stencil gets jammed, works great
