The Buddha's words on loving-kindness

This is what should be done
By one who is skilled in goodness,
And who knows the path of peace:
Let them be able and upright,
Straightforward and gentle in speech,
Humble and not conceited,
Contented and easily satisfied,
Unburdened with duties and frugal in their ways.
Peaceful and calm and wise and skillful,
Not proud or demanding in nature.
Let them not do the slightest thing
That the wise would later reprove.
Wishing: In gladness and in safety,
May all beings be at ease.
Whatever living beings there may be;
Whether they are weak or strong, omitting none,
The great or the mighty, medium, short or small,
The seen and the unseen,
Those living near and far away,
Those born and to-be-born —
May all beings be at ease!

Let none deceive another,
Or despise any being in any state.
Let none through anger or ill-will
Wish harm upon another.
Even as a mother protects with her life
Her child, her only child,
So with a boundless heart
Should one cherish all living beings;
Radiating kindness over the entire world:
Spreading upwards to the skies,
And downwards to the depths;
Outwards and unbounded,
Freed from hatred and ill-will.
Whether standing or walking, seated or lying down
Free from drowsiness,
One should sustain this recollection.
This is said to be the sublime abiding.
By not holding to fixed views,
The pure-hearted one, having clarity of vision,
Being freed from all sense desires,
Is not born again into this world.
(Translated from the Pali by The Amaravati Sangha)

  • pt4:

    Not falling into wrong views, being virtuous,

    And having insight;

    Sensual desires purged,

    He will surely not be conceived again in a womb.

  • Pt3: As a mother would risk her own life To protect her only child; Even so toward all beings, One should cultivate a boundless heart. One should cultivate for all the world A heart of boundless loving friendliness Above, below and all around, Unobstructed, without hatred or resentment. Whether standing, walking, sitting, Lying down or as long as one is awake, One should develop this mindfulness, This is called the noblest way to dwell in this world.
  • pt2: Whatever living beings there might be, Whether they are strong or weak, without exception; Long, huge, or middle-sized, Short, tiny, or huge. Whether visible or invisible, Whether they are living far or near. Born or yet to be born, May all beings have happy minds! Let no one deceive another, Let no one hate another anywhere. Neither from anger nor ill-will Should anyone wish harm on another.
  • Pt1: A person who is working skillfully on his well-being, Should act thus, to reach that sublime state: One should be able, upright, perfectly upright, Obedient, gentle, and humble. Content, easy to support With few duties, living lightly, Controlled in senses, prudent, Not impudent, unattached to families. One should refrain from any small action Which the wise might censure; (One should wish:) May all beings be well and secure! May all beings have happy minds!
  • i love the meaning of karaniya metta sutta. everyone must know it.. as an eg

    salla huka vutthi - can be satisfied with food so easily ( as i remember )

    Sandrindiyo - can control his 5 (eyes,nose,ears,tounge,body and the feelings get from these)
