The N.O.R.K. played in New York and Chicago in the late 1920's, but the key members; Paul Mares; tpt, George Brunies; tmb. and Leon Roppolo were all born in New Orleans in the early 1900's and their first band was formed when Leon Roppolo moved north and met up again with the other two, already in the Windy City.
They also recorded as "The Friars Society Orchestra", named after Friars Inn nightclub where they played.
This recording was made in the Gennett studios in Richmond, Indiana in 1923 when Jellyroll Morton joined them for a few numbers. Whether this was pre-arranged or just a happy coincidence is unclear, but I don't care!!
The credit for composing this jazz standard, "Milenberg Joys", is given as "Roppolo-Mares-Morton" -so that's another reason to celebrate the studio session recorded here.
Among the other musicians is Ben Pollack; dms. I will try to identify the others, and up-date these notes.

This is super! These folks are partially responsible for starting N.O. Jazz! Great musicians! Leon Roppolo’s clarinet is in the N.O. Jazz museum.
