The Burke Awards commemorates one of TPC's
first station managers, Matt Burke, who passed away unexpectedly in 2002. In his six years at The Peoples Channel, Burke not only maintained the daily operations of keeping a public access channel on the air, but he also designed and built the technical aspect of the station.
As station manager, Burke served the
Chapel Hill community by upholding every citizen's right to free speech. Through the medium of a community-run television station, all people are afforded the opportunity to exercise this freedom.
The Burke Awards showcase the talent of
local video producers. Each year producers submit programs to be judged in areas such as art and animation, documentary,
entertainment, informational, spiritual and youth programming. By celebrating the
hard work and creative spirit of our local community's media producers, we pay tribute to Mr. Burke's comitment to
The Peoples Channel.
