The second part of Tatiana's letter Scene in Act One of Eugene Onegin conducted by Anatole Fistoulari

Oda Slobodskaya was born in Vilno and trained with Natalia Iretskaya in St Petersburg. She was principal soprano in Fyodor Chaliapin's company, singing in Paris, and London, where she eventually settled. Justly renowned in the traditional Russian roles she also sang modern works such as Shostakovitch's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and Delius's Koanga. She was pioneering as a recitalist of Russian song.

  • Thank you very much, this is another great discovery... we never stop learning :-))

  • I think, unfortunately, this is the only operatic aria Slobodskaya recorded, but I think you will also enjoy the songs which she sings with beauty and great characterisation.

  • Oda can now be heard in 'Two Russian popular songs' and in 'Three Tales for Children' by Stravinsky, with her inimitable spoken introductions.

  • Thank you, Charlotte, for bringing me to bringing me to Oda Slobodskaya. What an wonderful, elegant voice it is.

I loved the music when I first heard Lucia Popp's rendition. Even more so when I began to understand what the beautiful sounding Russian words meant - and what the emotional journey was about.

    A classic!

  • Amazing I love her style.

  • Brilliant! And the conductor is no slouch either. Never have I heard the orchestral parts so brilliantly articulated. What a match!

  • did you know that Colin HOrsley has done lots accompanimenting to ODA?

  • When listening to Oda Slobodskaya's voice, I am reminded of the beauty of Lotte Lehmann's voice. This is a sumptuous voice , gorgeous legato and again......that rare element left out nowadays too often: --Personality--!

  • Magnificent
