California sea lion wise to rescue attempts.
After three consecutive days of attempted rescues of the entangled sea lion at Moss Landing Harbor beginning January 6, The Marine Mammal Center is employing another strategy in consideration of the animals health. Working in coordination with our colleagues at the National Marine Fisheries Service and with guidance from the Centers veterinarians, rescuers will stop rescue attempts for the next few days should the sea lion reappear at the Moss Landing docks or other water venues. Veterinarians have concern that the continued stress as a result of further rescue efforts, could in fact cause more harm to the animals health and possibly even tighten up the entanglements which are around his neck and mouth. This animal is very alert to his surroundings, the rescue attempts and the floating nets, and is still demonstrating that he can be quite active by jumping in and out of the water during rescue operations.
The best thing that can be done for this sea lion right now is to monitor how he is doing, and if after a few days, he still remains in the same location, re-initiate rescue attempts. Should he strand in a land area, the Center will attempt a rescue as it will be a different scenario and the animal can be better contained, resulting in a higher chance of a successful rescue.
