BBC News Channel: Top of the Hour Countdown (2009)

This sequence appears at the top of each hour on The BBC News Channel (the Corporation's 24-hour rolling TV news service in the the UK). Although various edits are used throughout the schedule, this full length version includes the first few seconds of the sequence (before the 60-second countdown clock appears on screen) and is rarely aired in its entirety.

The filmed sequences were created by Red Bee Media (formerly a creative division of the BBC) and show BBC reporters and correspondents at work around the world. The red signal that appears throughout the sequence is designed to be a graphical representation of reports being transmitted via satelite, to BBC News headquarters in the UK for broadcast. The closing shots of the sequence show the BBC Television Centre in west London, the home of BBC News.

The filmed sequence ends with an animated red and white swirling globe, created by legendary branding expert Martin Lambie-Nairn. It was introduced in 2008 with the aim of creating a unified BBC News brand for the organisation's expanding output, which now includes network and regional bulletins, 2 rolling news channels and online and mobile phone platforms.

The accompanying music was composed by David Lowe, and is an updated verstion of a track first used on BBC news bulletins in 1999. It is a radical departure from the orchestral themes used previously, and has proved to be very popular amogst audiences and staff alike.
