In this Video Snippet Venerable Bhante Vimalaramsi leads a short meditation session at the Portland College of Naturopathy and gives the beginning instructions for Lovingkindness (Metta).
Please note that Bhante teaches this in substitution for the breath as the path to awakening. This practice was taught by the Buddha as the most desired path to Enlightenment if you study the number of times this is mentioned in the Suttas as the way to meditate (Using the BrahmaVihara Method that is).
The Buddha did not mean this meditation as just a help to meditation but rather as main practice to be followed all the way to Nibbana. In other talks Bhante discusses this more in detail. This is called Samatha-Insight meditation. There is a special step that he says that the Buddha left out that when put back in changes this meditation from a "feel-good" meditation to a deep insight meditation that the Buddha intended it should be. This practice can lead one through the 8 jhanas to Nibbana. itself.
