Note for future: When in a dire situation that you think you may not get out of, but you're currently OK, use the freaking quicksave feature!
If you had quicksaved right after absorbing the soul, you could have attempted another route or other tactics and maybe have lived to die another day.

@WarEverlasting You can quicksave when enemies are nearby, you can't quick travel with enemies nearby.
