Sortition as a sustainable protection against oligarchy

We do not live in Democracy.

Elections don't protect us from scoundrels and simpletons. Some would say Bush Junior was both...

We don't expect sortition to select the perfect candidates. Actually, we make sure that even when the worst are selected, we will have enough ways to stop them, get rid of them and eventually punish them.

And remember, the magistrates (the people selected) don't govern like today's elected officials do. In a democracy, the magistrates merely carry out the popular assembly's decisions.

A two part selection process, first by the ballot and then by sortition of the most popular of the election results, combined with term limits, is better than either pure sortition or simple elections.

By using elections first you draw from a sortition pool of generally far more acceptable possibilities. The simpleton or obvious scoundrel will not gain access to the sortition process and undermine it's credibility. Term limits are an obvious and simple way to keep people rotating through posts.
