This song has many variations one being 'A Week Before Easter' but since its not Easter I'll stick with this version. Yes another sad song of love unrequited. Played in DADGAD for anyone wanting to know. There is a verse in the song.. "the men in the forest they ask it of me, how many strawberries grow in the salt sea, I answered them back with a tear in my eye, who many ships sail in the forest.. what the hell does that mean!!??

  • great arrangement on guitar though iching2 !

  • dadgad is so rich.. just pick any note within reason and it works..

  • we don't mind sharing but this is never an English song - understandably if someone has sanitised the Scottish vernacular lyrics it has perhaps lost it's identity - and it ain't Irish either.

  • i think it comes from a collective consciousness when a song travels so far in time and endures..

  • watched again and loved it again :)

  • kind words char.. thank you..m:)

  • that adds a lovely new dimension to the song.. I asked the question when i first put this out ... what is the symbolism of strawberries and sea, ships and forest.. its so sad..

  • t's the lament of a seaman who came home only to find the love of his life has moved on.

  • Hi Barbara.. that’s very kind.. i really enjoy the opportunity just to play songs that i enjoy playing if you know what i mean.. its really lovely what you write. If I were ever to play in public i would want to create and ambiance of low light, candles, convivial company and a set of songs that were just easy.. if the audience drifted to sleep throughout the evening than that would be a good result.. regards

  • @ichingiching .....although it is a wonderful voice to drift off to sleep with Mike. You put the listener at ease.....and create familiarity with your audience awake or drifting off. That's not something every performer can do.
