The Arizona Memorial is a 184 foot-long memorial structure platform that was built atop the sunken battleship USS Arizona. At the Arizona Memorial, you are literally standing over a grave site where the final resting place for 1,102 crewmen of the U.S.S. lost their lives; they are still entombed within the Arizona herself; and their names are engraved on a marble wall in the shrine room. From the platform you can see the battleship, which lies six feet below the water's surface. Even 70 years after the attack, oil is still leaking out of the battleship, also called the "Black Tears of the Arizona." Many visitors drop flower leis into the water from the Memorial, honoring the dead. Upon entering the shrine room, the reverence and honor it is was intended to inspire is immediately noticeable. All persons are keenly aware that this is hallowed ground. A flag of the United States of America is attached to a severed mainmast of the USS Arizona, does fly above the sunken battleship.
