I can't give her props though. She didn't prepare for the hike in any significant way.

Your book was recommended to me as inspiration for my own book I am writing on walking the Camino de Frances in Spain. I was 53 when did my walk, but I related to you so well - I laughed, I cried (really). Thanks for sharing.
I too lost my Mother young and there is some crazy independence that is born when that happens.

Had to read this for an English course in college...in my opinion this book sucks. I give her props for the hiking though.

Just read the book and this clip adds so much! Love the old photos. I did the PCT in 1977, good memories. Mad Monte

I found it not surprising that the most evil person she encountered was a bowhunter. Think Ted Nugent and that whole attitude of taking from nature vs. just experiencing it.

Having trekked along the JMT in the Sierra Nevada at one time in my early life I can definitely relate to Cheryl's backpacking adventure. I admire her tenacity and strength . Still can't believe that she would pack the PCT alone! She is an amazing talented writer who involves you in her book before you realize it.

At the border there's an 8 mile trail that leads to Manning Park Canada. There is a hotel and a highway next to the park. A Greyhound bus stops in Manning Park on its way to Vancouver. You could just as easily hitch hike out of Manning park. If you are a felon and don't want to leave the USA then you have to turn around and hike 30 or so miles south to Harts Pass where there is a highway.
