I was at Heritage USA on both June 24 & June 27, 1988, and on both dates I visited the TV studio on site to it through the hour-long live telecast of the morning show. This video captures a short segment of it. Obviously, Jim & Tammy are not present, after having resigned, then forcibly removed by Jerry Falwell.

Nevertheless, the show went on without them, albeit with far less excitement and enthusiasm.

Yes, the video is quite old, having come from videotape over 20 years old. So, yes, the video & audio quality are not the greatest. The audio is not sync-ed with the video for the most part, and there is an annoying "woodpecker" stuttering noise present at various points in the audio, apparently due to the transcription process necessary to convert the original videotape to a digital file that could be uploaded. So, just take the video at face value, and no stupid comments about the poor quality. The comments will simply be removed.

The show was wrapping up with a male singer singing a catchy tune called "The Sky's the Limit". Unfortunately, the hosts talked too long into his song and the show literally cut off the singer 1/2 way through his song. At 3:33 you can see the cameras which were focused on the singer begin to pack up and swing away for the day, although the singer is still singing for the studio audience. People watching on TV at home would simply have seen him cut off in mid-song. I believe the guy slowly walking across the studio floor from left to right, at 3:00 in to the video (with the walker) is Uncle Henry. It is when the guy is singing at the end of the show.

Afterwards, you can see studio staff roping off the set area so that people wouldn't walk onto it.

The guy talking beginning at about 5:10 was the new daily show host. I don't recall his name. Both he and a female co-host more or less took over in Jim & Tammy's place as host & co-host on the show in their absence.

The show ran daily from 11 am - noon. After the host stopped talking, I kind of hung out in the studio, recording some of the studio set, the audience area, and some of the reception/ entrance to the studio, located behind the seating area.

At 8:55 I caught a few close-ups of the studio set & orchestra section. I think the orchestra section was no longer used by this point, in an attempt to save money.

One final video, #5, taken on this date shows the lobby area of the broadcast barn. The people gathered around the booth in the lobby are buying the records that the host mentioned at the last part of this video.

  • I love watching your videos but your 'commentary' cracks me up!! 'Jim & Tammy are not present, after having resigned, then forcibly removed by Jerry Falwell.' How exactly can someone resign and then be 'forcibly removed'? You make it sound like Falwell put them in a bear hug and carried them out! LOL Also, you claim to know what was going on, but you don't know who ANYONE is!! All you seem to know are Jim and Tammy and that big bad man Jerry Falwell. Well here is a name for you David Taggart

  • Thank you for your comments. Allow me to elaborate. Jim & Tammy temporarily resigned, with the caveat that they were to return to leadership positions after a specific period of time, to which Falwell agreed. At the end of that time frame, when Jim & Tammy attempted to return, Falwell reniged on his agreement, and forced Jim & Tammy to vacate their offices and nearby home. If that's not a forced removal of power, I don't know what is.

  • I didn't go naming all sorts of names in this video precisely because I couldn't. My old video camera was neither provided enough clarity, or had enough power to zoom in on anyone in the studio seated area for recognition purposes. It'd have done no good whatsoever for me to start dropping this name or that name, then find out I was wrong all along. It's far better to not mention names than to mention wrong names, wouldn't you agree?

As far as Taggart, I am not able to see him in this video.

  • My goal was to provide a video from my personal collection, and then to add a bit of personal narration, based largely on memory. If I am wrong about a persons' name, or some other material fact, is that such an egregious foul?

Feel free to correct me where I am wrong, or add to my comments, but don't try to make someone feel like an idiot for trying.

Where are YOUR videos and comments?

  • thanks for these videos. I was at Heritage in 1987 and it was awesome. I too was captured by the behind the scenes stuff of the show. Here are some of the names to fill in the background, the man singing near the end is Les Marple, one of the PTL singers at the time. The show was hosted on this day by Ron Aldridge (dark suited man talking about the money at the end) and Brenda Davis. The previous host was Gary McSpadden. The woman singer was named Susan but I can't remember her last name.

  • Wow...this really brings it back for me. I remember the mood at that time. Everyone was pressing forward, but very uncertain what was going to happen.

  • great! thanks! i've always loved tammy faye...always trying to find a video of her singing ENOUGH IS ENOUGH...their theme when they first came under attack from the nc

    newspaper guy...

  • Then you may be interested in seeing the 25 - 30 other videos I have of PTL, Heritage USA, the one occasion that I actually saw Jim & Tammy in the lobby of the Grand Hotel, plus the video of Tammy Faye & Tammy Sue singing a duet together.

I've uploaded to YouTube an enormous amount from my personal collection of home videos of the site formerly known as Heritage USA, from both 1988 and 2009.

  • yes, i meant about the cameras moving away ...btw, i used to be a ptl member.

  • Huh? The entire song is in the video. Or do you mean that it was cut off in mid-song during the airing?
