Here is the rare albeit short video clip from the deleted song "When My Sugar Walks Down the Street" from the Judy Garland film "A Star is Born" (1954).
The sequence was originally part of the 15 minute medley "Born in a Trunk" and was subsequently deleted. Judy is seen singing with Jack Baker, who played her father in this sequence.

  • Where would this song be included in the BORN IN A TRUNK sequence.

After which song?. It would be interested to see it included in that medley

    of songs.

  • @AbrahamDiner I believe that it's included after Judy sings "I'll Get By" and "with the tricks I learned traditions / and the hardest one of all is no matter what the show must go on"

I believe the original script had Esther's character's mother (in the medley) die, and she and her father continue on with the act. To me that's where the song would have been inserted.

  • She is supposed to be his daughter here, but she looks like his wife. I wonder if that is why they cut it?

  • @defundthewar That's funny because she doesn't seem to show at all in any other part of the film, and the Born in a Trunk sequence was predominantly shot in around the same time frame (from June/July 1954). She would have been in the early stages of pregnancy as Joey was born in March of 1955 .. I'm curious now .. :/

But I always liked the fact that Judy chose many of the songs selected in the Born in a Trunk sequence - her own "personal touch" as it were. :)

  • All I know is, thank God this clip survived for us all to see and hear. It's not in the movie but, it's here. And she is wonderful.

  • No matter what Warner Brothers think the cause is, they should not have cut this sequence. A most wonderful segment that deserved to be part of the film.

  • @defundthewar I did know that!! And I've always loved that little bit of trivia. :)

  • @romantic2543 Here's something new you (and others) might not know. In the "Born in a Trunk" sequence, remember the drunk in the nightclub telling Judy, "Shing Melancholy Baby"? That is the voice of Judy's friend Humphrey Bogart.

  • @defundthewar Well they say you learn something new every day - thank you!! :) And it is a terrific film - one of my absolute favorites.

  • @romantic2543 "Born in a Trunk" was an afterthought, and clearly written and shot last. She is very visibly pregnant singing "Melancholy Baby" and about to break her water in a solo rehearsal hall dance step, wearing a strange black outfit. But it didn't matter, did it? It's a gem of a film for many reasons. Mason is terrific, too, with what little he has to do.

  • "When My Sugar" is an old, old song that there's no question that Judy knew from her vaudeville days. She may well have chosen it herself for this "Born/Trunk" sequence. I love the richness of her voice here, just listen to it on her last word, "tweet"-- how rich and full it is. As far as why this number was cut, I believe it was because she is obviously pregnant here, not so good for the "Star" storyline.
