Fuga G-dur / G major BWV 577
*NOTICE: This was a really hard one and especially the last part (2:13-end) took me over an hour to get the score fixed. There might be some parts "out of sync" but mostly it'll be okay though*
composed by J.S. Bach (1685-1750)
performed by Kay Johannsen, organ

@robertgift, I agree with you. This recording here is metronomic. Very little nuance. My problem with E. Power Bigg's recording of this piece is that it consists of 3 and a half minutes of slowly building up the sound. After a while, it gets monotonous. Granted, it's much more creative than this recording, but it doesn't fit the narrative that this piece depends on to make sense. This piece, mood-wise, is A-B-A, just like a movie, even though it's ritornello in its form.

@KhagarBalugrak: "E. Power Biggs is quite overrated..."
I am referring to Biggs' Gigue. Not his other recordings.
Bigg's Gigue is the most joyous, clear, wonderful recording of 577 I have ever heard.
This sounds like a practice exercise. The pedal is hardly heard.
The beginning quarter notes are not held full value. No wonderful subject mordents, grace notes, and trills after :28. Just one mordent at 1:51. No pedal at 2:02
[Toxic, can you display TWO music staves stacked?]

@robertgift, E. Power Biggs is quite overrated. He makes decisions in his recordings that leave the music sounding disjunct and very strange. The organist here makes the opposite mistake: he plays everything in an almost manner with very little nuance. If you combined E. Power Biggs and this organist, Kay Johannsen, you just might get something that sounds good.

Listen to E. Power Biggs play this. By far the best I have ever heard.
I wish Biggs had continued the mordents, grace notes and trills heard athe begining throughout this joyous work.

Memorized this in the early 1970s. (Loaned my Peter's Edition and have not seen the music since.)
Wonderful performance by Kay Johannsen. Female?
Thank you, toxic, for posting this.
Would two or three staves fit? (Video sometimes is far behind audio.)
The mordents, gracenotes and trills athe beginning I continue thoughouthis joyous, magnificent work, even in the pedal. At 2:03 I bring the subject in in the pedal! Much better.
I play this for people who hate organ music.
